Abhiruchi | 503-671-0432 | 3815 SW Murray Blvd Beaverton, OR 97005 | Lunch buffet 11:30-2:30 Dinner 5:00 - 9:30 7 days a week | $10-$15 | Yes | Our favorite Indian restaurant in Portland. Beats everything we've seen on the east side of town. And it is the only place we've found with south Indian food. So we particularly like the dosas, seikh kababs, and idli sambar. But everything we've had here is great. Now they have a more convenient location in Vancouver, but we haven't tried that yet.
American Dream Pizza | 503-230-0699 | 4620 NE Glisan St Portland, OR 97213 | Summer: Mon-Thu, Sat 11am to 10pm Fri, 11am to 11pm Sun 2pm to 10pm Winter: close one hour earlier Sun to Tues | $0-$10 | Yes | the feta cheese is particularly good: soft and mild. Best salads in Portland, except for the flavorless Caesar.
Appethaizing (AKA Krua Thai) | 503-233-9265 | 3207 SE Division St Portland, OR | Tue-Fri 11am - 3pm, 4pm - 9:30pm Sat-Sun noon - 9:30pm closed Mon | $0-$10 | Yes | Our most frequented thai restaurant. Best dishes here are the curries. Evil jungle noodles are pretty fun too. If you don't specify a spice level, you get mild which has a little kick, but not that much flavor. I'm trying to work up to ordering medium, but sometimes it blows my head off. I usually resort to adding my own seasonings at home: lime, sugar, and a touch of chili flakes.
Authentic Thai | 503-234-2521 | 3829 SE Division St Portland, OR 97202 | 11:30-3pm 5-9pm | $0-$10 | Yes | It seems good, but we haven't figured out what is the best thing here. With the closure of Thai Dish, this is going to be our standard Thai option. The pad khee mao is good. The panang curry is ok, but lacks oomph (probably needs more fish sauce and soy sauce).
Bay Leaf | Division and 45th? Portland, OR 97215 | $0-$10 | Yes | * CLOSED * They are strictly vege. Not even any fish sauce in the dishes. I'd say that makes the flavors pretty bland. It would be nice if they compensated by adding lots of chili or spice, but instead they rely on the flavor of tofu to carry the day.
Best Baguette | 503-788-3098 | 8308 SE Powell Blvd Portland, OR 97266 | $0-$10 | Yes | Great vietnamese sandwiches on the best french bread I've had in Portland. I asked a self-proclaimed baguette snob how he liked the bread here and he said it was "too fluffy". Well, that just means you can eat more of it. In the drive-through, you'll be asked if you want the vegetables on the side. If you say yes, you'll get the greens in a baggy that you can apply hours later and still have a fresh sandwich. We've never tried the "Special" that has head cheese. My favorite is the grilled pork sandwich and a Hong Kong Style Milk Tea. My 5-year-old likes the Paris Ham and Cheese.
Bete-Lukas | 503-477-8778 | 2504 SE 50th Ave Portland, OR 97206 | $0-$10 | Yes | This is, by far, the only Ethiopian restaurant in the neighborhood. So far, I've only had carry out from here, but it is still yummy even in plastic boxes.
Big Daddy's BBQ | 503-234-0007 | 3001 SE Hawthorne Portland, OR 97214 USA | Open Mon-Thu 11am-9pm; Fri-Sat 11am-10pm; Sun 11am-8pm | $0-$10 | Yes | * CLOSED * It seems to have smaller portions and is cheaper than it was. The food is still great as long as you like meat. The mac and cheese is boring. The fries are OK. The BBQ beans are pretty nice. The selection of sauces make it worthwhile. Re-closed again, probably for good.
Blue Thai | 42nd and Division? Portland, OR | $0-$10 | No | Was the Kalga Cafe.
Curds and Whey | (503) 231-2877 | 8036 SE 13th Ave Portland, OR 97202 | $15-$20 | No | Closed and turned into an art gallery. --- Not a restaurant, but a wonderful cheese shop right next to work, so I can bring home some new cheese once or twice a week. I need to keep track of all the new things I'm trying, but so far my favorites have been a Rocrastin and St Marcellin. The owner is charming and willing to recommend something to a cheese newbie like myself. He's even given me a free loaf of fresh bread when I came in at the right time. The only problem is that it usually takes longer than the 10 minutes that I have before my bus arrives.
DeNicola's | (503) 239-5220 | 3520 SE Powell Blvd Portland, OR 97202 | Fri-Sat 4pm-11pm Sun-Thu 4pm-10pm | $15-$20 | Yes | Great pasta. Pizza is thick and has plenty of sauce. We take out-of-town guests here a lot. I think we're just proud of the no-nonsense ambiance.
Domino's | 503-252-7700 | 453 NE 70th Ave Portland, OR | $10-$15 | Yes | No comment.
Dwaraka | 503-230-1120 | 3962 SE Hawthorne Blvd Portland, OR 97214 | lunch buffet 11:30 to 2:30 dinner 5pm to 9:30pm | $0-$10 | No | Wonderful to have south Indian food in the neighborhood. We got the Dwaraka Combo Platter and the dosa was delicious. Most important for me, the samosas and chutneys were great, but too spicy for our kids. I usually like the cilantro chutney best, but I think their tomato chutney is my favorite. The sambar was a little boring. The aloo mutter was perfectly reasonable. Their website seems to be a flash-only affair that won't let me see the menu.
El Tapatio | 2627 SE 82nd Ave (Clinton) Portland, OR | $0-$10 | No | Recommended by Cheryl Strayed
Flying Pie Pizzeria | 503.254.2016 | 7804 SE Stark St Portland, OR | 11am to 10pm 11am to 11pm Fri-Sat | $20-$25 | Yes | Very generous with toppings. Great sauce. The standard thick crust is really hefty. Even the thin crust is pretty thick. Haven't tried the extra thin crust.
Foster Burger | 503.775.2077 | 5339 SE Foster Road Portland, OR 97206 | Daily: 11am - 10pm | $10-$15 | Yes | Awesome fries. Yummy homemade buns. Expensive burger toppings. Poutine! Walls pasted with local concert posters. Shakes and banana splits.
Franks-a-lot (was Dog House) | 2845 E Burnside Portland, OR 97214 | $0-$10 | No | Drive through hot dogs and sausages. Now open on Sunday for after-church lunch.
Got Pho | 503-235-4411 | 3634 NE Sandy Blvd Portland, OR 97232 USA | $0-$10 | Yes | Excellent pho, and even better sandwiches. Grilled meat on rice is also yummy. If you aren't Asian, you really have to be insistent to get lettuce and herbs with your eggrolls. Too many whities just assume they are garnishes, I guess.
Grand Central Bakery | 7983 SE 13th Ave Portland, OR 97202 | $0-$10 | Yes | I don't go here so much anymore since they are so busy at lunch. The potato bread and sourdough are good for sandwiches that won't rip up your gums. Best sandwiches are the turkey/chutney and the tuna tosti. Avoid the reuben... they are a better bakery than deli.
Gustav's Rheinlander | 503-288-5503 | 5035 NE Sandy Portland, OR | 11am to 10pm Sun to Thurs 11am to 11pm Fri and Sat | $0-$10 | Yes | A favorite for Sunday lunch. Closing soon (2017?) for redevelopment. We will have to drive a lot farther for our pretzels and fondue.
Gyro House | 8140 SE Cora St Portland, OR 97206 | 11am to 9pm | $0-$10 | No | Yummy gyro. Lots of meat and fresh soft pita. The optional spicy sauce looks like a creamy yogurt and cayenne sauce. Not too spicy. I would like it a little better if it were less meat and more cucumbers and onions and lettuce, but I'd feel dumb for asking for it that way since the beef and lamb is clearly the star.
Hawthorne Fish House | 503-548-4434 | 4343 SE Hawthorne Portland, OR 97215 | Mon-Wed 11:30 to 9:45 Thur-Sat 11:30 to 11:30 Sunday Noon to 8:30 | $10-$15 | Yes | Another incarnation of the Corbett Fish House. That's good news because the Corbett Fish House has a great selection of fish, highly evolved breading, and yummy sweet potato fries. It is already doing a brisk business without any formal advertising. I normally love all things halibut, but here, I have to recommend the delicate and tasty Alaskan cod over the dense and dry halibut. Their "world's greatest" fries are not all that amazing. They are just about the same as Burger King fries. Nowhere as good as Wendy's or Burgerville. And although the Lake Superior Yellow Perch might sound exotic, you'll have a lot of bones to pick through and in the end it isn't worth the effort. We had a cream of crab soup here that was a lovely and buttery treat. Overall, a very welcome addition to the neighborhood.
Hoda's | 503-236-8325 | 3401 SE Belmont Portland, OR 97214 | Monday to Thursday 11-9 Friday 11-9:30 Saturday 12-9:30 Sunday 12-9 | $0-$10 | Yes | One of the many fantastic Lebanese restaurants in Portland. Almost as good as Nicholas's and closer to home.
Hot Lips Pizza | 503-234-9999 | 2211 SE Hawthorne Portland, OR 97214 USA | $0-$10 | Yes | Good for a quick slice and karma. The crust is tender and light. They tend to skimp on sauce.
India Grill | (503) 236-1790 | 2829 E Burnside Portland, OR 97214 | Daily 11:00am- 2:00pm Fri-Sat 5:00pm-10:30pm Sun-Thu 5:00pm-10:00pm | $10-$15 | Yes | I'd say this is the best Indian food on the east side. It has been a favorite with us for about ten years. Robust spices, yummy chutneys. The bengan bharta is gone from the menu! And the replacement eggplant dish (Bengan Ki Sabji) is just not the same. The stuffed green pepper (Simla Mirch Mayur) is surprisingly yummy. Note to self: this is the place where the green chutney is spicy and the red tamarind chutney is sweet. Rogan Josh is an old favorite here.
India House | 1038 SW Morrison St Portland, OR 97205 | 5:30 to 10pm | $10-$15 | Yes | Downtown, by the library. White table cloths, good Bombay Aloo.
Jade Teahouse and Patisserie | (503) 477-8985 | 7912 SE 13th Ave Portland, OR 97202 USA | closed Monday | $0-$10 | Yes | The pad thai here is very light and delicate. I suppose I could even say "enchanting". Most of the time, I like it with more punch, so I ask for chili to add to it. If the food were any more beautifully presented, they would have to use white table cloths. I haven't tried any of the hot tea selections, but I've had a ginger peach iced tea that was freshly brewed and fantastic. I've heard that the hum bao are very good here.
Kim Jong Grillin | SE Division and 46th Portland, OR | Mon-Sat 12pm to 8pm Sunday 12pm to 6pm | $0-$10 | Yes | A new favorite. I keep meaning to try other things on the menu, but I always get the Bibim Box with spicy pork and am always satisfied.
La Bamba | 503-445-6341 | 4908 SE Powell Blvd Portland, OR 97206 USA | Seven days a week | $10-$15 | Yes | Our new favorite Mexican restaurant. Authentic enough to have dishes that we can't get in basic taquerias and not so authentic that they don't serve cheese on anything. The salsas are wonderfully flavorful. The location is a drag, but it is really close to our house so we don't mind looking at Powell Blvd that much. Some dishes need salt. I like the enchiladas suizas.
La Palapa | 503-432-8014 | 1864 SE Hawthorne Blvd Portland, OR 97214 | $0-$10 | No | Yummy, hand-made tortillas. The burritos have a large proportion of rice and beans which makes them bland. The chips and salsa are great. The pastor is pretty fatty. I guess that means it is authentic. I haven't found a main dish that I'm really happy with, but the appetizers will keep me coming back to try again.
La Salsa | next to Pizzacato on Division and 60th Portland, OR 97215 | $0-$10 | No | * CLOSED * Very tasty, probably our new favorite. The menu is limited, just a little bit broader than a taco truck. The chili rellenos are lovely. The burritos can be regular or special (adds sour cream and guacamole). The owner is extra charming.
Legin | 503-777-2828 | 8001 SE Division St Portland, OR 97206 | Dim sum daily 10am - 3pm 10am to midnight Sun - Thurs 10am to 2am Fri and Sat | $0-$10 | Yes | * CLOSED * Famous for dim sum. Exhaustive menu. Quick for take out when we don't have any other ideas for dinner. Where else can you get sauteed frog? No, we haven't tried it. Our favorites are the moo shoo chicken, hot pot eggplant and scallops, and pot stickers. The Hawaiian Fried Rice is pretty good too.
Lemongrass | (503) 231-5780 | 1705 NE Couch Portland, OR 97232 | Tue-Thu 12pm-2pm, 6pm-9pm; Fri 12pm-2pm, 6pm-10pm; Sat 6pm-10pm | $25-$30 | No | Best thai in Portland. Easily. But expensive and a long wait, so it is only for special occasions.
Los Gorditos | 503-875-2615 | SE Division and 50th Portland, OR 97215 | Monday-Saturday, 10am-9pm. | $0-$10 | No | Cash only. My favorite is the Stacy burrito with chicken instead of beef. The garbage burrito is also a winner. I think the thing that makes them so good is the flavor of the refried beans. Don't forget they are closed on Sunday.
Los Pepes | 611 Goerig St Woodland, WA 98674 | $0-$10 | No | We *really* like the chips and salsa here. It is our favorite of the three Mexican restaurants that we know of in Woodland.
Mad Greek Deli (was Foti's) | 503-232-0274 | 1740 E Burnside Portland, OR | 10 to 7 Mon through Sat | $0-$10 | No | Good gyros. Almost as good as when it was Foti's.
Mai Thai | (503) 232-9844 | 3104 SE Belmont Portland, OR | Lunch Mon - Fri 11.00 - 3.00 Dinner Mon - Thu 3.00 - 9.30 Fri 3.00 - 10.00 Sat - Sun 12.00 - 10.00 | $15-$20 | Yes | This is our new favorite thai restaurant in the neighborhood. It is more expensive and better quality than Sivalai Thai, which is our standby. The spice scale is mild, medium, hot, extra hot. I found hot to be just about right, but perhaps a little uncomfortable. We had the Tom Yum soup, Panang curry, pad grapao. All was good, the soup was the weakest element and it was still quite flavorful and definitely spicy.
Manee Thai | 636-256-8898 | 481 Lafayette Center Ballwin, MO 63011 | $0-$10 | Yes | Adequate but not super great. Can't remember the spice level. We had a curry, pad thai, and fried rice. It ended up costing twice as much as I would have guessed.
Nam's Deli | 78th and Powell Portland, OR | $0-$10 | No | Recommended by Cheryl Strayed. Fresh vietnamese sandwiches.
Nicholas | 503-235-5123 | 318 SE Grand Ave Portland, OR 97214 | Mon-Sat 10-9pm Sun 12-9pm | $10-$15 | Yes | Can't beat the meat mezza and veggie mezza combination for two people. The best thing is the fresh bread served with each meal. The magic of the fresh bread vanishes in a few minutes, so if you get take out from here it is good, but not magical. You really have to eat *in* their restaurant.
Pad Thai Kitchen | 2309 SE Belmont St Portland, OR 97214 | 11AM–2:30PM, 5–9:30PM weekdays 12-9:30PM weekends | $0-$10 | Yes | We liked the pad kee mao, but not the pad thai or fried spring rolls. The pad thai was OK, but doesn't live up to the amazing reviews I've seen. It is gloopy and a little bland.
Petite Provence | 503-233-1121 | 4834 SE Division St Portland, OR 97206 | 7am to 8pm (9pm on Fri and Sat) | $0-$10 | Yes | What's good? We usually walk here in the morning for pastries. Chocolate croissant and almond brioche are favorites.
Pho Hung | 503-772-0089 | 3120 SE 82nd Portland, OR 97366 | 10am to 10pm 7 days a week | $0-$10 | Yes | Latest pho in the neighborhood. Good alternative while Pho Van is being remodeled. The egg rolls are awesome. The grilled shrimp and pork over rice is pretty great too.
Pho Van | (503) 788-5244 | 1919 SE 82nd Ave Portland, OR 97216 | Daily 9am to 9pm | $10-$15 | Yes | Reopened after remodeling. They've gone a little upscale of their previous incarnation, which was a little upscale of the average pho shop. Now, their two signature dishes are pho and hot pots. The food is just as good as ever. I haven't tried a hot pot yet... they look really big.
Pok Pok | 503-232-1387 | 3226 SE Division St Portland, OR 97202 USA | Mon-Sat lunch 11:30 - 3:30 dinner 4:30 - 8:00 | $0-$10 | Yes | Limited menu until they open up a bigger restaurant, but excellent flavor for the dollar. The papaya pok pok salad has a bit more fish sauce than I like, but the game hen, pork, and soup are all BRILLIANT. And the thai iced tea with lime is the perfect summer drink. It is very similar to the "lime soda sweet" that we had from Thailand to India, only 5 times more expensive. Well, I guess if you count the plane fare to Thailand, it comes out cheaper than the real deal.
Roma's Pizza | 618-377-5800 | 121 E Bethalto Dr Bethalto, IL 62010 | Mon closed Tues 11am - 9pm Weds 11am - 9pm Thur 11am - 9pm Fri 11am - 10pm Sat 11am - 10pm Sun 11am - 9pm | $0-$10 | No | Cracker crust, and mushrooms from a can. Spaghetti is a little mushy, not really al dente. Still our favorite pizza within driving distance from Alton. Because it has mozzarella cheese and NO PROVEL!
Rovente Pizza | 503-234-7777 | 3240 SE Hawthorne Blvd Portland, OR 97214 USA | Open till 11:30pm Open late on Friday and Saturday | $0-$10 | Yes | Thin, chewy crust -- with the consistency of fried dough. I ordered sausage, onion, and garlic, and it came without any red sauce. I guess you have to ask for that.
Rudy's Pizza | 503-771-8008 | 4716 SE Powell Portland, OR 97206 | $0-$10 | Yes | Good thick crust, bright sauce, better than Dominoes. But avoid the sausage. This is now our second favorite pizza for delivery.
San Felipe Taqueria | 503-235-8158 | 6221 SE Milwaukie Ave Portland, OR | $0-$10 | No | Great chili rellenos. The carnitas burrito is my favorite... bursting with flavor. Even the beans and rice that are added to the combo plates are full of yummy goodness. The famous fish tacos, aren't so great though... lots of breading and grease. Just a fish stick, really, but you can't taste the fish over the grease.
Signature India Manchester | 636-220-1700 | 14031 Manchester Rd Ballwin, MO 63011 | $0-$10 | Yes | Perfectly fine curries. Liked the smallish samosas, but wished for better chutneys. The pakoras were kind of a mistake... just a bunch of fried batter crumbles with no discernible vegetables.
Sivalai Thai | 503-230-2875 | 4806 SE Stark St Portland, OR 97215 | 11am to 10pm | $0-$10 | Yes | Friendly and yummy. If you have to wait long for your order, you'll get a free appetizer. And every order we've had so far has come with free sweet sticky rice. But the pad thai here is not their strength.
Steakadelphia | 503-788-7141 | 5835 SE Powell Portland, OR 97215 | Mon-Sat 11am to 8pm Closed Sunday | $0-$10 | Yes | What's good: philly cheesesteak with mushrooms, tasty fries. Don't be afraid to ask for lots of toppings from the free topping list. It takes a lot of peppers and sauces to even be noticed when beside the mighty cheese steak.
Taco Bell | 503-777-9662 | 4933 SE Powell Boulevard Portland, OR 97206 | 24 hours daily | $0-$10 | No
Tao of Tea | 503-736-0198 | 3430 S.E. Belmont St Portland, OR | $0-$10 | No | Tea and exotic nibbles. Soak in the atmosphere. Impress your out-of-town friends.
Thai Dish | 503-236-1466 | 4604 SE Hawthorne Blvd Portland, OR 97215 USA | $0-$10 | Yes | CLOSED. I like the medium pad thai with chicken although it sits at the upper edge of my spice endurance. I wonder if I can order it with the noodles more well-done. I like crispy burnt bits in my pad thai and this doesn't have that. Still the pad thai here is the best I've found in the neighborhood.
Thai Lahna | (503) 230-0422 | 7937 SE 13th Ave Portland, OR 97202 | Sun 11:30am-2:30pm, 5pm-9pm Mon-Thu 11am-3pm, 5pm-9pm Fri 11am-3pm, 5pm-10pm Sat 11:30am-2:30pm, 5pm-10pm | $0-$10 | Yes | Another good bet for lunch. Favorite dishes are Pad Kee Mao, House Special Curry, and Spicy Chicken Basil. Medium spicy is about right. Sometimes I go all the way up to "Spicy" but that can be uncomfortable.
Thai Spoon | 1334 SE Hawthorne Portland, OR 97214 USA | $10-$15 | No | Medium pad thai was too spicy to enjoy. Needed sugar and cilantro. Mild spicy house special fried rice was good.
Thanh Thao | 503-238-6232 | 4005 SE Hawthorne Blvd Portland, OR 97214 | 11am to 10pm | $0-$10 | Yes
Toney Bento | 503-234-4441 | 1423 SE 37th Ave Portland, OR | Mon-Sat 11am-9pm | $0-$10 | Yes | Charming and relaxing atmosphere. Tasty yakisoba. Our favorite dishes are Combo bento and gyoza bento.
Vincente Pizza | (503) 236-5223 | 1935 SE Hawthorne Blvd Portland, OR 97214 | $0-$10 | Yes | Best pizza in Portland. I'm looking at you, Apizza Scholls, when I say that. The salads are good too. You can ask for the pizza extra crispy if you want to avoid a somewhat runny middle.
Ya Hala | (503) 256-4484 | 8005 SE Stark Street Portland, OR | 11 am until 9 pm | $0-$10 | Yes | I'd say they are *almost* as good as Nicholas'. The bonus here is the grocery connected to the restaurant. I hear you can buy shwarma to take home and cook yourself.
Zien Hong | 503-288-4743 | 5314 NE Sandy Blvd Portland, OR 97213 | 11am to midnight 7 days a week | $0-$10 | Yes | What's good: Shrimp chow mein (pan fried), Orange flavored chicken, Pepper-salted shrimp is excellent |
